Darkhan, a city of Mongolia

Darkhan: The city was built in the middle of nowhere in 1961 as a satellite town to the pressure of sprawl Ulan Bator, and as an industrial center in the North. Darkhan, which means "blacksmith", is a modern, sterile. Fortunately, designers Darkhan put a bit of thought in urban planning, so that the smokestacks are on the south side of the city and pollution is far from residential areas grow unabated by the wind from the north. The Russians have designed the city in their image and a large Russian community still lives in Darkhan.

With a population of 75 000 inhabitants, Darkhan is the third largest city of Mongolia. Even if it is located in the heart of the province of Selenge, the city is considered a municipality in its own right. The most popular site in the city is the monastery of Kharaagiin.

Getting to Darkhan: In minivan, the journey takes about five hours between Darkhan and Ulaanbaatar. You can take a bus station near the hotel Kharaa in Darkhan.

There is also a journey between Darkhan and
Erdenet (three hours) and Sukhbaatar, a town on the border of Mongolia.

Darkhan is located along the Mongolian railway linking the north and south of Mongolia. Departing from Ulan Bator, it is possible to visit Darkhan. Some also want to experience the adventure of travel to Darkhan then Sukhbaatar, the Mongolian border. This is an adventure for the trip to a very low price.


NB: Please note that the two airlines Mongolia (the new airline MIAT and AERO MONGOLIA) provided no service between Ulaanbaatar and Darkhan in the summer of 2008.

Darkhan-Ulan Bator: 8h30 am
departure, arrived in the Mongolian capital to 16 hours. Other departures to 23 hours, arrived in the Mongolian capital at six o'clock am the next morning. There is also a fast train that takes only 5 hours to make the journey between Ulan Bator and Darkhan.

Darkhan-Erdenet: 5 hours ride at night.

Kharagiin Khiid: Probably the most interesting is the Monastery of Darkhan Kharagiin. Situated in a beautiful log cabin in the old city, it has recently become very active. With a multitude of protective deities and a tree covered with blue silk scarves khatag, the monastery has the feel of a center of pilgrimage.

Museum of Darkhan-Uul: This museum, also called "Museum of Folk Art" contains a well-organized collection of archaeological discoveries, traditional clothing, religious and a few stuffed animals mandatory.

 

More than 200,000 visitors since 2005
